THE ART OF THE SEA

To begin our contribution to the 'Year of the Sea' celebrations, we present an exhibition of artworks from our own collections on a wide-ranging maritime theme. It will feature some old favourites as well as less familiar works, in an artistic tribute to the Bailiwick's maritime heritage.

'HEARTS OF OAK' - SAUMAREZ AND NELSON

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Nelson's victory at Trafalgar, we look at the parallel careers of two great sailors - the Guernseyman Admiral James de Saumarez and Lord Horatio Nelson.

A PASSION FOR THE SEA

Continuing the maritime theme, we present an exhibition featuring the works of William Lionel Wyllie (1851-1931), arguably the most celebrated marine painter of his day. His father (also a painter) briefly had a house in Guernsey and William Lionel definitely painted here. The museum has recently acquired a small number of his Guernsey pictures, which we are showing for the first time, together with a selection of loaned works to demonstrate the extraordinary range of his technique. William Lionel and his family were deeply involved with the preservation of HMS Victory at Portsmouth and we have a showpiece work to commemorate the bicentenary of Trafalgar Day, 21st October. Limited Edition print available.

KEEPING UP APPEARANCES

An exhibition of recently conserved artworks and historic costume.
Despite the whimsical title, this is a serious exhibition showing off works belonging to the States of Guernsey (not all from the museum's own collection) which have recently undergone conservation and/or restoration. The differences between these terms will be explained and illustrated, together with recommendations for picture owners about simple preventative conservation measures they can employ to keep their own artworks in good condition.
The exhibition particularly features a number of Victorian or early 20th century portraits of unknown sitters. Any assistance from visitors who might be able to identify the subjects will be gratefully received.

In addition to the artworks, the exhibition will also include the sumptuous cape or mantle with the Order of the Bath insignia and an Elizabethan-style costume, worn by Admiral Lord James de Saumarez to the coronation of George IV in 1823. These unique items of costume have recently been acquired by the museum and have also just been conserved.
