Frequently Asked Questions
- The word 'Photograph' appears in the headings on some of the search
pages, even when I'm looking at images of artworks. I find that a bit
confusing, surely it's a mistake?
- Technically, no, as we're actually offering prints that have been created
photographically. The web service we are using is really designed for use by
professional photographers, and we have to fit in with the standard service
that it offers.
- Can I have some assurances about the image quality?
- Our images are derived either from professionally taken medium format
transparencies, from recent all-digital photography, or from direct
high-resolution scans. They are printed on good quality art paper, using
archival quality inks.
- Should I be concerned about fading?
- The archival quality inks used by our processing bureau have excellent
fade resistance under normal conditions. As with any original photograph or
artwork, prolonged exposure of prints to direct sunlight will cause more
rapid fading than displaying them in more shaded conditions.
- My picture doesn't fill the page, is that correct?
- Almost certainly, yes; in the case of artworks we are normally committed
to supplying reproductions no bigger than the size of the original - and in
the same proportion. In the case of a 'wide format' work there will
inevitably be white space above and below the image on the standard paper
sizes we use.
- Do I have to pay VAT on my order?
- This service is based in the Channel Islands and no VAT is payable on
local CI orders. Orders from the UK below £18.00 in total value are
currently VAT exempt. Orders destined for other EU countries will be liable
for VAT at the appropriate rates.
- There are many other images of artworks on your website, can I buy
prints of those too?
- We will be working to extend the current range of prints on offer,
depending on how popular the service proves to be and on the availability of
staff time. However, there are copyright issues which need to be addressed
in relation to reproducing more recent works and works which are on loan to
us. In the medium term, this is likely to mean that we will expand our
offerings in the area of items owned by the States of Guernsey (including
the museum's Permanent Collection) and where copyright is not an issue. By
all means
contact us if you have particular favourites which you would like to see
offered as a print. We will take note of suggestions though we cannot
necessarily undertake to offer them on the site.
