Great Victorian Collectors and Intellects:The Lukis family of Guernsey

Date: 2nd - 4th June 2006

Venue: Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery, Guernsey, Channel Islands

A conference to celebrate the life and work of F C Lukis and his family and other great Victorian archaeologists throughout Europe

Keynote address by Professor Timothy Champion on the evening of 2nd June

Frederick Corbin Lukis lived in Guernsey in the Channel Islands from 1788-1871. He created a remarkable archaeological archive, the majority of which is now held in the collections of Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery. Lukis worked at a very interesting and exciting time in the development of scientific thought in the nineteenth century, when archaeology was evolving into the discipline we know today. The archive created by Lukis and his family, particularly W.C. Lukis, covers not just Guernsey and the other Channel Islands but many parts of Britain and Europe.

Guernsey Museum is mounting a major exhibition on the remarkable Lukis family in 2006. To coincide with the opening of the exhibition in June 2006 there will be a short conference on the work of Lukis and his contemporaries. This is an initial call for papers on the history and development of archaeology and related disciplines or any other similar topic.

There will be an opportunity for delegates to view the exhibition, visit archaeological sites on Guernsey and view the Lukis archive on request.  It is hoped that part of the entertainment will include a reader’s theatre production of some of the Lukis correspondence.

Please send abstracts for papers of up to 30 minutes duration to Heather Sebire, Archaeology Officer, Guernsey Museum h.sebire@museums.gov.gg
