About the Work
As we look at this bronze abstract by the local sculptor, Roy Smith, we can imagine the Mammoth's great mass, weight and strength as it steps forward. The tension of a real moving form is present within this work, symbolising the magnificence and enormous presence of this prehistoric beast.
About the Artist
Roy came to the Island in 1963 to be the Design Modeller and Master Mould Maker at the newly established Guernsey Pottery. His training was a mixture of both fine art and ceramics. He studied sculpture from life at Burslem School of Art, Stoke-on-Trent. As well as completing a seven year apprenticeship at the Royal Doulton factory, he went on to become a Mould Designer and Model Maker in this distinguished factory.
