William John Caparne was born in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, in November 1856, the son of Sophie Warwick and John Hamer Caparn (sic). He died on the Channel Island of Guernsey in January 1940, having spent the last forty-five years of his life living there in virtual penury. After his death his work faded into obscurity and it is only in the last decade that it has acquired a degree of recognition...
When more is known about the life and work of Caparne, as surely it will be eventually now that his name is on course to be rescued from near oblivion, there can be little doubt that he will belong among those special artists whose life and work remain indivisible...
