William John Caparne was born in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, in November 1856, the son of Sophie Warwick and John Hamer Caparn (sic). He died on the Channel Island of Guernsey in January 1940, having spent the last forty-five years of his life living there in virtual penury. After his death his work faded into obscurity and it is only in the last decade that it has acquired a degree of recognition...
