The Discovery Room is a very recent development which opened in July 2011. It is the first phase of a project to gradually refurbish all the public areas at Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery. In space formerly occupied by the original Rona Cole Gallery, the Discovery Room provides a stimulating activity environment for visiting groups and individuals. It is effectively a flexible use area and site for hands-on activities and is particularly well used during the school holidays. The small permanent displays within the Discovery Room present a 'Cabinet of Curiosities approach, reflecting the diversity of the museum's collections.

The changes to the facilities at Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery will ultimately see the main permanent displays renewed but the creation of a new permanent art gallery is the next priority, scheduled for completion in 2012. Like the smaller space it will replace, the new art gallery will bear the name of the late Rona Cole, first director of the museum service.
