Heritage Education Services for Schools

FREE for pre - booked School Groups

Schools are invited to bring groups to the sites free of charge where they will be given help and support by the staff. Worksheets and activity sheets are available though we do encourage you to make your own. Please apply to the Education Officer for a Free Pass if you wish to make pre - visits.

Teaching Sessions (Key Stages 1/2/3)

Education staff in costume (where appropriate) offer teaching sessions with original artefacts and replica items to help to set the scene, on the relevant site. All presentations are flexible, and relate to the National Curriculum in a Guernsey context. We have a number of original prehistoric tools and weapons, replica items including a working model of a mangonel , replica longbow and crossbow bolts, a travelling chest, casket and ‘rope’ bed. We also have a wide range of Victorian artefacts and toys. Allow at least one hour for your visit.

Handling Collection

Some artefacts and costumes can be made available for loan. Loans are usually made for around 3 weeks. Topics covered include:

1920/30s Castles

ARTWORKS

We have an extensive collection of paintings from 18th century to the present day by local and visiting artists. Most of the collection is digitised and CDs with selected works by artist or by subject (e.g. Peter Le Lievre or ‘The Sea’) can be borrowed with at least 3 weeks advance notice. We also have prints of some of the works for sale or loan.


RESOURCES for Local Studies and related topics

Information sheets, videos and reference material are available on request.

An activity pack on James de Saumarez and a book ‘Out of Nelson’s Shadow’, which chronicles his life and career, are available through Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery, priced £1.50 and £4.99 respectively.

Victorians in Guernsey is a new activity book focusing on the life and times of Frederick Corbin Lukis and his family.

AVCE, GNVQ, Vocational GCSE Leisure & Tourism Pack.

For older students we arrange meetings with our retail manager and can supply statistics and information for those studying Tourism, Manufacturing etc. A Leisure & Tourism Resource Pack relating to Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery in particular is in preparation for all secondary and tertiary establishments.


CASTLE CORNET

The Castle offers a wealth of opportunities for learning. The Maritime Museum covers our Maritime history from Pre-historic times to the present day, and includes areas displaying material relating to Romans, ship-building, sea transport, explorers and safety at sea etc. The Story of Castle Cornet Museum covers the history of defence and life in the Castle from early times. The site itself has the remains of the Medieval castle, Tudor defences, ‘period’ gardens and evidence of the German Occupation in 1940-45 amongst others. Free Castle Trails, worksheets in French, English & German and other activities are available. Please contact the Education Officer on 706969. GUERNSEY MUSEUM & ART GALLERY Candie Gardens, St Peter Port. 

Free leaflets, French and German translations, worksheets in French and English and children’s activities are available. The galleries are ideally suited for work on Victorians, Pre- history, Iron Age, the local environment and Art. We have a room which is sometimes available for groups wishing to work on site. Our main exhibitions often have ‘hands on’ activities for children. Please contact the Education Officer on 706969 or the museum office on 726518 ( NB Not available for visits in January)


FORT GREY Rocquaine Bay

The Fort is a Martello tower which houses a Shipwreck Museum. Free activity sheets, leaflets in French and German, worksheets in French, English and German available. The site and Museum are great for creative writing. We can arrange for costumed storytelling on the Civil War and its effect on Guernsey, the role of the Militia and the development of the road networks by Sir John Doyle in the early 19th century and James de Saumarez’ escape from a superior French Squadron in 1794.
