Paintings by Charles Coker

Charles Coker (1918-2000) showed artistic talent at an early age.  For many years this found an outlet in photography which became his profession.  He maintained an interest in sketching however and eventually he took up painting in oils.  Charles Coker became a member of the States Arts Committee, and President of the Sarnia Arts and Crafts Club, and his work became well known throughout the Bailiwick. 

This exhibition illustrates the wide range of Charles Coker’s talents, and comprises his own favourite pictures and those belonging to his family.  This is the first time that they have been shown in public.

Peindre en Normandie – (Painting in Normandy)

A collection of paintings by artists inspired by Normandy, including Boudin, Dubourg, Dufy, Géricault, Monet and Vuillard.

In co-operation with the Fédération Régionale pour l’Action Culturelle en Basse-Normandie.

Guernsey, with its strong geographical and historical links to Normandy, is very honoured to have been invited by FERAC to show “Peindre en Normandie”.  It offers a rare opportunity to see, in Guernsey, paintings by internationally renowned French artists of the 19th and 20th centuries.

“Peindre en Normandie” was set up in 1992 as a joint incentive by public and private concerns in Normandy.  Its mission is to collect paintings by artists inspired by the region, and to make them better known by the public.  The collection now stands at over seventy pictures which, when it is not touring, is based at the Musée des Beaux-Arts at Caen.

Easter Festival of Living History for Local History week

Characters in the Castle - Story telling and costumed drama.
Good Friday – Easter Monday and throughout the season.

Performances will be drawn from the following:

• Costumed Tours
• The tale of a garrison soldier at the end of the Civil War, 1651
• The story of General Lambert – imprisoned in the castle by Charles II after the death of Cromwell
• The Hatton sisters recall the explosion which destroyed the castle's Donjon in 1672
• The sad tale of the Cauchés sisters burnt at the stake in 1553, from Foxe's Book of Martyrs.
• The story of Rex Warneford awarded the Victoria Cross in 1915 for being the first to destroy a Zeppelin airship.
• ‘A Quiet War’ - Reminiscences of the Occupation 1940-45

‘Platform 4’ - From the National Railway Museum in York.

Story tellers 'Platform 4' recount the harrowing experiences of Philip Saumarez during Anson’s Round the World Voyage from 1740-44. This culminated in the capture of a Spanish treasure ship.
Also,‘Full Steam Ahead!’ – the story of the shipwreck of the ‘Stella’ in 1899.

THE QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY

Each year, on this day Guernsey Museums & Galleries offer FREE ENTRY to all its sites. A 21 gun salute is fired from Castle Cornet, accompanied by military music and the Elizabeth College Cadets. At Fort Grey and Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery staff dress in costume and host a number of special events. See the local Press for details.

A ‘Dig in Time’ is an exciting new temporary exhibition for summer 2002 to show the most recent archaeological discoveries in Guernsey. Over the last ten years excavations all over the island have provided new information and finds which will help to piece together the story of Guernsey’s ancient past. Come and see the Lihou intaglio, the tools of the first settlers, and evidence of the first financiers in St Peter Port! Try your hand at ancient crafts and touch the past! Did you know the St Peter Port market is built on a Roman site? Visit us and find out more!

In his most challenging and thought provoking exhibition to date Eric Snell explores themes of energy and invisibility in two new installation works. Supported by examples of some of his earlier Burnt Wood Drawings, 'Capturing Images' traces the development of Snell's work over the last 12 years since 'The Last Supper' - which was exhibited at Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery in 1990.
In his first ‘Capturing Images' installation, Snell questions the use and role of security cameras in today's society. Who's looking at who and why?
In the Rona Cole Gallery, Snell captures the very energy of his body in a new series of shroud pieces.
