A display reflecting the recent archaeological excavations on Lihou Island.
The fascinating story of Lihou Island and its monastery is explored through recent archaeological evidence.

An Exhibition of exquisite Natural History Illustrations including shells, butterflies and landscape sketches by Guernsey's pioneering nineteenth century antiquarian and archaeologist, Frederick Corbin Lukis. He presented two bound volumes of his work to his daughter in 1870. The illustrations have been painstakingly conserved and mounted and are now on display for the first time.

A selection of paintings from the Museum's permanent collection including recent acquisitions. The exhibition takes as its theme, images inspired by journeys abroad. In the work of local artists such as Naftel and Le Lievre experiences of foreign cities and landscapes are depicted. The exhibition also looks at the work of artists who came to Guernsey, as a foreign destination, to explore the clear light and dramatic landscapes of the Island.

 

2nd February - 7th March - The B. G. WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR EXHIBITION

The 15th British Gas Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition in one of its first showings outside London. This exhibition promises a visual feast of natural-world images.

 

4th Feb - 28th April  - FLORA AND FAUNA  (Paintings from the Permanent Collection)
Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery - Rona Cole Gallery.
Open daily 10am - 4pm

This Exhibition with a natural history theme complements the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition in the adjacent Gallery. It includes the magnificent ‘Otter in a Landscape’ by Matthias Witthoos (1627-1701).

On March 30th 1899, the London and South Western Railway ferry Stella, hit the Casquets rocks in fog and sank with the loss of 105 lives. Accusations of racing ensued. This superb centenary exhibition examines the history of the disaster with items recovered from the wreck, life size figures and a video dramatisation of the subsequent enquiry.

 

31st March - Fort Grey Shipwreck Museum and Castle Cornet and its Museums - Re-open for the 1999 Summer Season.

To celebrate the Easter holidays and Bank Holidays during April and May, the staff at Fort Grey and the Guernsey Museum may be found dressed in historical Guernsey costume.

 

Thursday April 15th is a FAMILY LEARNING DAY at all three of our sites.
Opening hours will be extended to 6.30pm and extra events arranged.

 

Sunday 25th April  - The 400th Anniversary of Oliver Cromwell’s Birth
Castle Cornet

This historical figure is recalled in a celebration which recalls the time of the Civil War - a dramatic time in the Castle’s history.

During May, Guernsey celebrates Liberation Day (May 9th)
Local islanders share tales of the German Occupation of Guernsey during the Second World War. There will be a display of artefacts from the period and examples of substitute foods such as parsnip coffee, used to overcome the deprivations of war

We mark MUSEUM’S WEEK from May 15th - May 23rd with an offer of ‘two for the price of one’ tickets at all our sites. Staff may be found in costume on certain days and various special events will be held.

BRIAN MOSES will bring his special brand of poetry to Fort Grey on Sunday 16th May. You may meet local residents from the 1900s or a group of ‘minstrels’ singing sea shanties. Look in the local Press for details.

17th - 20th May - WRITER’S TRAIL with Children’s Poet Brian Moses.
Castle Cornet

Look out for a special visit from children’s poet Brian Moses. His work with local schoolchildren around the Castle will be published as a special edition Poetry anthology.

Wednesday May 19th - Extended opening for all three of our sites 10am - 6.30pm

Saturday May 22nd is a FAMILY LEARNING DAY at all three of our sites, with events for all the family.

Gallery Interpreters "Platform 4" will be giving live performances exploring the ‘Stella’ story.
June 3rd Opening hours are extended until 6.30pm on with an extra performance at 5.30pm.

On June 4th the group will be visiting the ‘Stella’ exhibition in Alderney.

Each year, on this day Guernsey Museums & Galleries offer FREE ENTRY to all its sites. A 21 gun salute is fired from Castle Cornet, accompanied by the Guernsey Concert Band and the Elizabeth College Cadets. At Fort Grey and the Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery staff dress in costume and host a number of special events. See the local Press for details.

 

3,4,5th June TOURS of the Castle Gardens as part of Floral Guernsey week

Plants which have played a part in Castle Cornet’s long history from the Guernsey Lily to medicinal herbs are explored in tours of four period gardens.

ECHOES FROM THE PAST - Historical Re enactment
Castle Cornet

Echoes From The Past recreate life in Castle Cornet during 1499. Meet residents Thomas Trawden, Adele de la Mare and Ned and Ann ie Moulder and Thomas Knowles a cartographer and navigator who has come to visit.

This exhibition, mounted in conjunction with the Science Museum, London and the Royal Astronomical Society focuses on the first total eclipse of the sun in the Channel Islands for over 1000 years which will take place on August 11th. The exhibition will illustrate the history of eclipse watching and the development of our understanding of such momentous events.

Friday June 18th  - ‘A TASTE OF TUDOR’ - Finger Buffet & Hog Roast

Join the members of the Echoes From the Past in an evening of music, dance and Tudor feasting. Come in costume if you wish! Tickets available from the Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery £10 adults, £6 children. Wine, beer and mead at (almost )16th century prices!

ECHOES FROM THE PAST - ‘The sinking of the Boreas 1807’

Fort Grey, Rocquaine

‘Echoes From The Past’ tell the story of the loss of HMS Boreas commanded by Guernsey man Admiral de Saumarez, which struck the Hanois reef in a storm in 1807 with the loss of 127 men.

JULY 2000 - DECEMBER 2000

ART FOR THE MILLENNIUM ‘ FUTURE MEMORIES’ Exhibition

in association with N.M. Rothschilds & Sons

Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery, Candie Gardens, St. Peter Port.

1999 sees the launch of a major new venture in association with Rothschild’s Bank. Artists with local connections from the Bailiwick and beyond, are invited to submit works produced between January 1999 and March 2000, for an open exhibition run on the lines of the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition. NM Rothschilds & Sons have generously funded a number of awards for pieces selected for the exhibition, which will be staged in the Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery in the latter half of the year 2000.
