Book cover: Monograph 6

Until 20 years before the publication of this book, little was known about the Iron Age occupation of Guernsey, apart from the 11 cist burials discovered between 1818 and 1905. More recently there has been something of a renaissance in Guernsey archaeology, with local enthusiasts, the Guernsey Museums & Galleries service and Oxford University Institute of Archaeology working in partnership, to study a variety of newly discovered sites (particularly, Kings Road, St Peter Port) and re-examine the earlier finds.

From all this activity - excavation, fieldwork and museum studies - a great deal has been learned of the island community in the Iron Age. This book attempts to bring the evidence together and to present it in detail as a contribution to the continuing debate. In the concluding essay the significance of the island in the broader Atlantic Iron Age system is tentatively explored.

Bob Burns was Archaeology Officer for Guernsey Museums & Galleries from 1980-1996.

Barry Cunliffe is Professor of Archaeology at the Oxford University Institute of Archaeology.

Heather Sebire studied classics at University College, London and took over from Bob Burns as the Archaeology Officer at Guernsey Museums & Galleries in 1996.
